Jessica Chastain: Breaking up the Hollywood Boys' Club

Jessica Chastain has always been very vocal about equity on film sets.

She has voiced her persistence on closing the gender gap and and underlined that male and female actors should be paid the same - since they are doing the same work.

Interestingly enough that is still a conversation and challenge, with long ways to go.

But did you know, that Chastain is walking the talk and changing the industry one movie at a time.

Octavia Spencer stated in 2018 how Jessica helped her get paid five times her salary on a comedy they did together.

When Spencer told her about the challenges she faced being a woman of color in Hollywood, despite her award-certified work, Chastain made sure to negotiate accordingly.

How Jessica Chastain now went about making „The 355“ is quite remarkable.

"The actresses are the owners of the film. It used to be where a studio system would decide who’s valuable and usually it would be the ones in their twenties. And I had this idea: What if we raise the money on our own? So we’re the studio. We’re the owners."

Jessica Chastain is breaking up the Hollywood Boys Club one movie at a time.

In December I had the pleasure of talking to her for BILD Germany about this female empowerment move. One of many more to follow.
